According to the report, there has been a se\'en-fold increase in output (at current prices) after the implementation <strong>of</strong> CAD programmes. whieh enable better and efficient use <strong>of</strong> water on the farm. However. these results need to be interpreted with caution. because. the difference is attributed exclusively to CAD programme implementation, which. in reality may not be correct. The impact <strong>of</strong> other yieldenhancing inputs such as fertilisers. pesticides. etc .. used by the farmers is not brought out. Therefore. the CAD programmes may be treated as enabling factors for using yield-augmenting supplementary inputs by the farmers. This will, however. be examined while analysing the farm level data obtained from the farm households selected for the study. Given the limitations mentioned above, an attempt has bl!l!n made to \\ork out the benefit cost ratios (BCR) in various projects. Ihis helps t" lInJeht~IIlJ the relati\'e efficiency <strong>of</strong> the projects. The BC ratio has been the highest in Pothund~ project at about 15. followed by Ch3lakud~ with 13.3: Gayathfl ahout 10 Jnd NeYYJr with 8.9 (Table 6.7). ~~- ~- --~ In all others. the BC ratio is not encouraging enough. The performance <strong>of</strong> Vazhani is disappointing with negative returns. This differential performance is a function <strong>of</strong>. among other factors. cropping pattern. A project with relatively more commercial and high value crops perform obviously better than the one where traditional and inferior varieties <strong>of</strong> crops are grown. If we look at the contribution <strong>of</strong> various crops to total earnings in a command area. it gives some interestmg insights. For instance. a water intensiv'e crop like paddy accounts for a major contribution in MaIampuLha. Gayathri. Pothundy and Mangalam projects. its share being 61 per cent. 80 per cent. 57 per cent and 50 per cent respectively (Table 6.8). The contribution <strong>of</strong> coconut is the highest in six projects where its share ·.. aries from 47 per cent in Walayar project to 89 per cent in the Chalakudy project.
