As per the studies conducted by the CADA in the Peechi ayacut, paddy is cultivated in 62 per cent <strong>of</strong> the area, followed by crops like coconut, arecanut, tapioca, banana, pulses and other crops cultivated in 20 per cent <strong>of</strong> the area. 4.1.4 Kole lands Kale lands are a typical landform lying two meters below the mean sea level. As cultural operations are possible under rainfed conditions and the land being below the mean sea level. growing any crop was risky and thus emerged the colloquial terminology. Kale. meaning 'bumper crop at chance'. Historically. Kole lands were reclaimed from Thrissur lake for paddy cultivation. Kale lands remain submerged with water during June to January. Adequate amount <strong>of</strong> freshwater was necessary to do any cultural operations. As the Kale lands remain waterlogged during most part <strong>of</strong> the year. dewatering is essential to make the entire area fit for cultivation which requires adequate amount <strong>of</strong> freshwater. The water from the Peechi project \\as expected to bring the entire kole land under cultivation during summer. Kole lands are connected to the sea through backwaters and thus the danger <strong>of</strong> intrusion <strong>of</strong> seawater will always be there. This problem is expected to be overcome through the freshwater made available hy the Peechi irrigation project. 4.1.5 Operation <strong>of</strong> the irrigation system Water is supplied for the sc'ulIld crup (A411I1dakall) during Septemher to Decemher and for the third C[l)1' 1/'/II1Chll) Juring January to April. 4.2 The Kallada Irrigation and Tree Crop Development Project (K I & TeDP) I) Th(' Kallada Irrigation and Tr('e Crop Devclopment Project (KI & TCDP) or KIP is th~ oldest irrigation project in the state and is located in an undulating topography.
