Chapter 4 A Pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> Study Area and Sample Households This study has been undertaken in the command areas <strong>of</strong> two major irrigation projects in Kerala State, namely, the Peechi irrigation project located in Central Kerala (Map 4.1) and the Kallada Irrigation and Tree Crop Development Project (K1& TCDP) located in Kollam district in Southern Kerala (Map 4.2). The command areas haw been selected based on the life <strong>of</strong> the irrigation project, potential irrigable area, institutional strategies for effecting On-Farm Development (OFD) and geographical location. Other important considerations for selecting these two projects under reference are the land use and water management practices. especially, OFD measures (see Appendix 4.1). 4.1 Peechi Irrigation Project I) The Peechi Irrigation Pruiect (PIP) is situated in Thrissur district. The ultimate irrigation potential <strong>of</strong> the project is 45700 ha. The ayacut includes an area <strong>of</strong> 14000 ha. <strong>of</strong> single cropped paddy to be brought under irrigation and I
