4.1.2 Financial aspects The total estimated cost <strong>of</strong> the scheme was Rs. 235 lakhs. An amount <strong>of</strong> Rs. 229 lakhs was spent till the end <strong>of</strong> the Second plan. Deducting the amount expected from betterment levy (Rs. 144 lakhs). the net cost <strong>of</strong> the scheme was estimated to be Rs. 85 lakhs. After deducting maintenance charges. an amount <strong>of</strong> Rs. 2.80 lakhs was expected annually by way <strong>of</strong> water cess (1.2% <strong>of</strong> the total cost). Thus. the annual return from the scheme \\as targeted at Rs. 3.29 per cent (GOK. 1967b). The project was estimated to irrigate. as mentioned earlier. an area <strong>of</strong> about 0.46 lakh acres with an estimated output <strong>of</strong>25000 tons <strong>of</strong> paddy per year. 4.1.3 Crops and crop seasons The project was originally designed to irrigate only paddy in all the three seasons. viz .. r·irip!,11 I Kharin . .\/rmdilkon (Rabi) and 1'1I1lcha (Summer). The r ·irippII season spreads o\er June- September. therefore. does not require irril.!ation - because <strong>of</strong> I.!ood rainfall durinl.! the South-West monsoon. The second ~ - crop (}vlundaknn) is grown between September- January and requires adequate supply <strong>of</strong> water if the ~orth-Fast monsoon fails. Summer paddy (I'linchil) IS grown in limited area by using the seepage water from the canals as water IS released in the canals for irrigating the J\o/(' lands. J\o/(' lands constitute almost 60 per cent <strong>of</strong> the ayacut area <strong>of</strong> the "eeehi project. It was reported that as a result <strong>of</strong> the introduction <strong>of</strong> the sch':Jl1':. the productivity per acre has incr.:ascd by 1104 Ibs.
