the use of his image”. 106 Moreover, Dexter K<strong>in</strong>g was reported to be seek<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ance for<br />

a $50 million <strong>in</strong>teractive museum <strong>in</strong>stalled with virtual reality games, the K<strong>in</strong>g Dream<br />

Centre. One critic referred to this as a plan to create a theme park “I Have a<br />

Dreaml<strong>and</strong>”. 107 In the meantime, community liaison with the impoverished<br />

community around Sweet Auburn had seem<strong>in</strong>gly come to a st<strong>and</strong>still. Beneath the<br />

surface of the seem<strong>in</strong>g tranquillity of the solemn memorial l<strong>and</strong>scape on Sweet<br />

Auburn, <strong>in</strong>tense struggles had unfolded between the state <strong>and</strong> the K<strong>in</strong>g family, <strong>and</strong><br />

between the dem<strong>and</strong>s of civic memory <strong>and</strong> those of commerce over the appropriate<br />

management <strong>and</strong> use of K<strong>in</strong>g’s legacy <strong>and</strong> <strong>biography</strong>. And private, family commercial<br />

<strong>in</strong>terests claimed prior rights over the public <strong>in</strong>terest. Indeed, as one commentator put<br />

it “America may claim K<strong>in</strong>g as its civic sa<strong>in</strong>t <strong>and</strong> ‘I Have a Dream’ as a national<br />

manifesto, but K<strong>in</strong>g’s words belong to his estate”. 108<br />

As this contest cont<strong>in</strong>ued to unfold between the National Parks Service <strong>and</strong> the K<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Centre, the biographic paradigm that was promoted on both sides of Auburn Avenue<br />

was one of veneration <strong>and</strong> the ‘Great Man’, not of reveal<strong>in</strong>g concealed pasts or of<br />

critical reassessment. 109 Biographic exhibitions, tours <strong>and</strong> products focused on K<strong>in</strong>g’s<br />
