In the 1990s, more generally, biographies of repression, violence, suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> survival<br />

were <strong>in</strong>scribed <strong>in</strong>to the very s<strong>in</strong>ews of the <strong>in</strong>stitutional work<strong>in</strong>gs of social transformation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> submission of evidence of gross violations of human rights to the TRC required the<br />

construction of a story of by a deponent of his or her own experience or that of another<br />

person <strong>in</strong> a formal statement. <strong>The</strong>se statements of “kill<strong>in</strong>g, torture, severe ill‐treatment,<br />

abduction <strong>and</strong> disappearance” that occurred “<strong>in</strong> a political context” between 1960 <strong>and</strong><br />

1994 were made follow<strong>in</strong>g a narrative order prescribed on a pro forma violations statement<br />

form. This <strong>in</strong>cluded specific details about the violation, the details of the victim, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

organisational <strong>in</strong>volvement, the political context or circumstances, the event, perpetrators,<br />

possible witnesses, result<strong>in</strong>g medical <strong>and</strong> legal processes, <strong>and</strong> physical, psychological <strong>and</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial consequences. To assist deponents, the statement form provided examples of<br />

detailed descriptions as a guide. People were assured that <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g their statement about<br />

an experience of violation, they would help the country “come to terms with the past” <strong>and</strong><br />

contribute to “restor[<strong>in</strong>g] human <strong>and</strong> civil dignity” to victims of abuses. 167<br />

In the statement, the person also had to supply <strong>in</strong>formation on previous statements made<br />

about the violation to any other body as well as any support<strong>in</strong>g documents that would<br />

assist the TRC <strong>in</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g the experience described. Designated TRC statement<br />

takers <strong>and</strong> others who facilitated the official submission of the story of violation were<br />

asked to assist <strong>in</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g forensic completeness by check<strong>in</strong>g that the statement had been<br />

“completed as fully as possible”, <strong>and</strong> to make any observations of the process of tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the statement that may have been necessary. Significantly, deponents were also asked to<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicate what their expectations were of the process “for <strong>in</strong>dividuals”, “for the<br />

Community” <strong>and</strong> “for the Nation”. <strong>The</strong>y were also asked to consider any “symbolic acts<br />
