artist, Jacob Khumalo, who had exhibited his M<strong>and</strong>ela pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs at the Ubuntu craft<br />

village at the World Summit, to remove the images. Both artists <strong>in</strong>sisted that their work<br />

had been motivated by their “admiration for Madiba”. 273<br />

<strong>The</strong> NMF had become aware of M<strong>and</strong>ela’s br<strong>and</strong> value after US research had shown that<br />

M<strong>and</strong>ela’s face was “the most recognisable <strong>in</strong> the world”, <strong>and</strong> that his br<strong>and</strong> was<br />

surpassed only by Coca‐Cola. Permission was required for the reproduction or sale of an<br />

image of a head of state. Anyth<strong>in</strong>g that resembled M<strong>and</strong>ela required the NMF’s<br />

authorisation. <strong>The</strong> NMF claimed that they would give permission for images that “will<br />

enhance his image <strong>and</strong> not someth<strong>in</strong>g that will break down his image”. It was very<br />

important that M<strong>and</strong>ela’s “image <strong>and</strong> stature … be respected”. <strong>The</strong> NSF’s action sent<br />

ripples through the gallery circuit <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> some remov<strong>in</strong>g all pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g any reference to M<strong>and</strong>ela. 274 After the NMF had given the Treatment Action<br />

Campaign (TAC) permission to use an image of M<strong>and</strong>ela <strong>in</strong> a TAC T‐shirt for its<br />

advertis<strong>in</strong>g campaign, it was forced to step <strong>in</strong> to prevent potential embarrassment, when it<br />

found the image used on posters advertis<strong>in</strong>g a march to parliament. 275<br />

While the NMF attempted to curtail some acts of M<strong>and</strong>ela reproduction, they encouraged<br />

others <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>corporation of an image of M<strong>and</strong>ela’s face on to an elaborate<br />

national costume made of ostrich sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> feathers, which Miss <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> would wear<br />

at the 2004 Ecuador Miss Universe pageant. <strong>The</strong> NMF spearheaded a campaign named<br />

after M<strong>and</strong>ela’s Robben Isl<strong>and</strong> prison number, 46664 to raise substantial funds for<br />

HIV/Aids anti‐retroviral treatment projects, for the care <strong>and</strong> support of <strong>in</strong>fected people,<br />

for social <strong>and</strong> scientific research, <strong>and</strong> generally “to arouse the conscience of the world”.<br />

An <strong>in</strong>ternationally televised benefit concert <strong>in</strong> Cape Town <strong>in</strong> December 2003 saw<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational artists perform <strong>in</strong> front of a giant bust of M<strong>and</strong>ela’s smil<strong>in</strong>g face, ensur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
