(5) AURAL AND ORAL PRACTICE<br />

Every single part of the course requires active collaboration from the stu<strong>de</strong>nt both insi<strong>de</strong> and outsi<strong>de</strong> class: stu<strong>de</strong>nts are expected to <strong>de</strong>vote<br />

time to the preparation and completion of exercise material before attending the lessons. Only in this way, we (stu<strong>de</strong>nts and teachers) will be able<br />

to make the most of every lesson.<br />

EVALUATION<br />

There will be a mid-term exam at the end of the 1st semester to test stu<strong>de</strong>nts’ progress.<br />

The final examination will cover all the aspects of the course and will be divi<strong>de</strong>d into two parts:<br />

a) a written exam, including Use of English exercises, dictation, reading comprehension and text production.<br />

b) an oral exam<br />

GENERAL INTRODUCTION AND AIMS<br />

The main purpose of the course is to acquaint the stu<strong>de</strong>nts with some of the major aspects of the history of the language in or<strong>de</strong>r to wi<strong>de</strong>n<br />

their un<strong>de</strong>rstanding of present-day English. With this aim in mind, class time will be <strong>de</strong>voted to the following aspects:<br />

1. A theoretical approach to the History of the English Language. 2. A practical approach consisting of linguistic analysis and translation from<br />

Old English into Mo<strong>de</strong>rn English.<br />

EVALUATION<br />

Stu<strong>de</strong>nts will be able to take an exam in January, covering the theoretical and practical contents <strong>de</strong>alt with until then. Should they pass this<br />

exam, they would not have to answer the questions corresponding to this part of the program in the June final examination. Both this exam and<br />

the June final exam will consist of the following parts:<br />

1. A Theoretical paper on the programme. 2. A practical paper consisting of linguistic analysis and translation. The linguistic analysis will have<br />

the following parts: Syntactical analysis, Morphological analysis, Phonological analysis, Graphical Analysis and Semantic Analysis.<br />

In both cases it will be mandatory to pass both parts of the exam individually to pass the subject.<br />
