tional and theatrical texts. Classes will combine theoretical presentations and an analysis of literary texts that all stu<strong>de</strong>nts should have read before<br />

coming to class. Both English and Spanish will be used in class.<br />

COURSE OBJECTIVES<br />

The goal of this course is to reveal the close connection that exists between the literary text and the socio-cultural milieu of the various geographical<br />

areas from Africa and the Caribbean; and, to help <strong>de</strong>velop the necessary critical tools and terminology on postcolonial theory that will<br />

help stu<strong>de</strong>nts approach and analyze literary works by African and Caribbean authors.<br />

COURSE EVALUATION<br />

Stu<strong>de</strong>nts’ final gra<strong>de</strong> will <strong>de</strong>pend on the quality and performance/accomplishment of the following:<br />

attendance and participation (20%)**<br />

home assignments (20%)<br />

oral presentation (30%)<br />

final paper/exam (30%)<br />

** If a stu<strong>de</strong>nt misses more than one week of class (3 hours), this percentage will not be applied to his/her final gra<strong>de</strong> and s/he will need to<br />

take a final exam.<br />

PROGRAM<br />

The course will be divi<strong>de</strong>d into four sections:<br />

1. General Introduction to the Course, and the origins and <strong>de</strong>velopment of Postcolonial Studies.<br />

2. Reading and analysis of theory and literary texts by authors from West, East and Southern Africa<br />

3. Reading and analysis of theory and literary texts by authors from different regions of the Caribbean: Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua,<br />

Dominica, St. Lucia<br />

4. A general revision and discussion of the main topics <strong>de</strong>alt with throughout the course.<br />

A BASIC BIBLIOGRAPHY will be provi<strong>de</strong>d in class.<br />

*** IMPORTANT: All stu<strong>de</strong>nts interested in taking up this course, must go to the assigned classroom the first day of class.<br />

Adquirir una competencia comunicativa básica a través <strong>de</strong>l aprendizaje <strong>de</strong> unos contenidos lingüístico-funcionales, pragmático, sociolingüísticos,<br />

léxicos, gramaticales y sintácticos, siempre teniendo el cuenta el Marco <strong>de</strong> Referencia <strong>de</strong>l EEES (Nivel A1).<br />

Adquirir una competencia cultural básica a través <strong>de</strong>l análisis y el estudio <strong>de</strong> los principales aspectos <strong>de</strong> la situación italiana reciente y<br />

actual.
