EVALUATION
One major exam will be held at the end of the semestre. The final examination will consists of the following parts:
A theoretical paper on the programme.
A practical paper consisting of liguistic analysis and translation from Middle English to Present-day English.
Both parts of the exam will have to be passed independently to pass the exam. Students will be provided with a sample exam at the beginning
of the course. Students will be allowed to revise their exams immediately after they have been graded.
OUTLINE OF PROGRAMME
THEORETICAL:
Unit 1. Socio-historical introduction to the Middle English period: The Norman Conquest and its influence on language development.
Unit 2. Major phonological changes at or before the time of the Conquest.
2.1. Synchronic and Diachronic description of the vowel system: /æ/ 1 and / æ/ 2 , the development of Old English diphthongs, open-syllable
lengthening, vocalization of /j/ and /w/: new Middle English diphthongs.
2.2. Synchronic and Diachronic description of the consonant system.
Unit 3. Major Middle English Morphological and Syntactical changes.
3.1. The loss of inflections: reduction of cases.
3.2. Towards new syntactic structures.
Unit 4. Middle English Lexical changes: Anglo-Norman influence.
Unit 5. The Dialects of Middle English. Dialectal characteristics. Representative Middle English texts.
Unit 6. Socio-historical introduction to the Modern English period.
Unit 7. Standardization: Wycliff and the Lollards or Standard type I, Standards Type II and III, Chancery Standard or type IV.
Unit 8. Major Modern English phonological changes.
8.1. Synchronic and Diachronic description of the vowel system: Great Vowel Shift and other changes.
8.2. Synchronic and Diachronic description of the consonant system.
PRACTICAL:
- Revision of the most important phonetic, lexical and semantic processes.
- Practical exercises related to the contents of the syllabus:
- Spelling and phonological patterns of change from ME (< OE) to PdE.
- Exercises on the Great Vowel Shift.
- Identification of dialectal characteristics in different texts.
- Translation of a variety of representative texts of the Middle English period: fragments from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Owl and
the Nightingale, Ancrene Wisse, Ayenbite of Inwyt, from Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, Shakespeare as an example of Modern English.
- Analysis of the Middle English texts previously translated from a phonological and semantical perspectives.
