Introduction This section provides an overview of the role of boat units in support of
the Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue (SAR) program. In an average
year, boat units are responsible for 70% of the lives saved and 90% of the
property saved by the U.S. Coast Guard. Boats perform 75% of all SAR
sorties.
