This section outlines trainee prerequisites. It also provides an insight<br />

into how the instructor is chosen.<br />

Prior to training for an advanced crew position, the trainee shall be<br />

previously certified in the next lower crew position, except when<br />

entering training for the crewmember position. Coxswain trainees<br />

do not have to complete engineer certification.<br />

The trainee shall have the willingness and maturity to take on the duties<br />

and responsibilities related to the boat crew position.<br />

Boat crews are usually the boating public’s first and often only contact<br />

with the <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>. Therefore, trainees must be willing and able to<br />

interact positively with the public. This requires attention to both<br />

appearance and attitude, along with a good professional knowledge of<br />

applicable <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> policies and procedures.<br />

Instructors are assigned by the unit Commander after consultation with<br />

the Training Petty Officer. Each trainee shall have an assigned<br />

instructor. Trainees and instructors should be in the same duty section.<br />
