Chapter 9 – Aids to Navigation Units<br />

Boat Keepers<br />

D.8. Deck<br />

Aids to Navigation Team OICs should assign a Boatswain’s<br />

Mate/Coxswain (E-5 or above) to be the Boat Keeper – Deck for each<br />

boat assigned to the Aids to Navigation Team (one boat, one Boat<br />

Keeper – Deck). The Boat Keeper – Deck shall:<br />

(01) Oversee all aspects of deck standardization and maintenance for<br />

their assigned boat.<br />

Coordinate maintenance and scheduling between the Deck and<br />

Engineering Departments.<br />

Engineering<br />

Aids to Navigation Team OICs should assign a Machinery Technician<br />

(MK3 or above) to be the Boat Keeper – Engineering for each boat<br />

assigned to the unit (one boat, one Boat Keeper – Engineering). The<br />

Boat Keeper – Engineering shall:<br />

(01) Oversee all aspects of engineering standardization and<br />

maintenance for their assigned boat.<br />

(02) Assist the Boat Keeper – Deck in coordination of maintenance<br />

scheduling between the Deck and Engineering Departments.<br />

Collateral Duties<br />

Assignment<br />

If staffing does not allow for an average workweek of 68 hours or less,<br />

department and Assistant Department Heads should retain responsibility<br />

for all collateral duties. Collateral duty tasks may be assigned to duty<br />

standers on an ad-hoc basis as long as those tasks do not interfere with<br />

duty standers’ primary responsibilities (i.e., training and operations).<br />
