Chapter 9 – Aids to Navigation Units<br />

Deck Department<br />

D.7. Department<br />

Head<br />

A senior Boatswain’s Mate (i.e., E-6 or above), subordinate to the XPO,<br />

shall perform the duties as head of the Deck Department:<br />

(01) Perform the duties of the head of a department as specified by<br />

Reference (i).<br />

(02) Manage the Deck Department and be responsible to the OIC for<br />

the topside maintenance of boats, associated equipment, vehicles,<br />

and the unit facilities.<br />

(03) Serve as Operations Officer.<br />

(04) Serve as Communications Officer.<br />

(05) Serve as Navigation Petty Officer.<br />

NOTE<br />

If the requirement for an E-6 Boatswain’s Mate is unachievable due to the Aids to<br />

Navigation Team billet structure, the next senior BM shall perform this duty.<br />

D.7.a. Operations<br />

Officer Duties<br />

and<br />

Responsibilities<br />

The duties and responsibilities of the Operations Officer shall include the<br />

following:<br />

(01) Coordinate and control movements of boats (and vehicles, when<br />

operationally employed).<br />

(02) Prepare the daily operations schedule and duty section watch<br />

schedules.<br />

(03) Maintain boat and Aids to Navigation Team emergency bills.<br />

(04) Administer the Aids to Navigation Team’s operational readiness<br />

program for boats and associated equipment, including towing<br />

vehicles and trailers.<br />

(05) Manage and direct training of Coxswains, Engineers, Boat Crew<br />

Members, and other Aids to Navigation Team duty standers.<br />

(06) Coordinate training syllabi in accordance with pertinent<br />

Commandant Directives.<br />

(07) Provide communications, weather, navigation, and public<br />

information services as required.<br />

(08) Supervise the Qualification Examining Boards and the Operations<br />

Standards Board.<br />
