Coxswain<br />

Duties include responsibility for propulsion and auxiliary<br />

machinery while underway, preventive and corrective<br />

maintenance while in port, in addition to the duties of Boat<br />

Crew Member.<br />

In addition to the duties of ATON Boat Crew Member, duties<br />

include responsibility for safety awareness, boom or crane<br />

operation, and an in-depth understanding of system<br />

components.<br />

In addition to the duties of Boom/Crane Operator, duties<br />

include responsibility for buoy deck safety, proficiency in<br />

buoy deck rigging, and ability to supervision of buoy deck<br />

evolutions.<br />

The extent of the Coxswain’s responsibilities and authority are<br />

specified in Reference (i). Contingency Coxswains shall be<br />

responsible, in order of priority, for the following:<br />

(01) Safety and conduct of passengers and crew.<br />

(02) Safe operations and navigation of the boat.<br />

(03) Completion of the sortie(s) and mission(s).<br />

Contingency Coxswains will respond to the following:<br />

(01) Hazards to life and property.<br />

(02) Violations of laws or regulations, except for<br />

Auxiliarists.<br />

(03) Discrepancies to Aids to Navigation.<br />

The Contingency Coxswain competency specifically focuses<br />

on skills required to effectively perform: Maritime Homeland<br />

Security; Domestic Expeditionary Support to National<br />

Defense; and Domestic, Natural or Man-Made Disaster<br />

Response and Recovery missions.<br />
