Safeguarding America’s maritime security through complementary and<br />

non-redundant military and law enforcement capabilities is the <strong>Coast</strong><br />

<strong>Guard</strong>’s unique contribution to U.S. national security. Maritime security<br />

is a critical element in ensuring homeland security and protecting critical<br />

infrastructure, enforcing sovereignty, and defending American citizens<br />

and interests.<br />

The <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> has five major national defense capabilities:<br />

(01)<br />

<strong>Coast</strong>al Sea control<br />

(02) Maritime interception operations<br />

(03) Military environmental response operations<br />

(04) Port operations security and defense<br />

(05) Peacetime military engagement<br />

In the U.S., these capabilities are used to meet the United States <strong>Coast</strong><br />

<strong>Guard</strong>’s Title 14 U.S.C. responsibilities. It is likely that units will be<br />

directly or indirectly involved in performance of or support to the <strong>Coast</strong><br />

<strong>Guard</strong>’s national defense missions.<br />
