Chapter 5 – Mission Types<br />

Description and Authority<br />

C.1. Description<br />

Unit law enforcement operations generally include a variety of activities<br />

within the unit’s Area of Responsibility (AOR), including:<br />

(01) Responding to reports of observed violations of maritime laws or<br />

regulations.<br />

(02) Patroling to detect and deter unsafe boating and unlawful<br />

maritime activity.<br />

(03) Boarding to detect and suppress violations of all Federal laws and<br />

educate the boating public.<br />

(04) Coordinating activities with waterways user groups (e.g. fishing<br />

associations, recreational boating groups), community leaders,<br />

and other law enforcement entities.<br />

C.2. Authority<br />

Various sections of Titles 8, 14, 16, and 46 U.S.C., several Executive<br />

Orders, and Presidential Decision Directives contain authority to conduct<br />

the <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>’s ELT mission. Refer to Reference (d) for more specific<br />

guidance.<br />
