Section B. Surf Operations and Surf Training Doctrine<br />

Introduction<br />

NOTE<br />

In order to ensure safe and effective surf training and operations, the<br />

following guidance has been established.<br />

A Non-Resident Standard Surfman Training Package Training Modules course is<br />

available at: http://cgweb.tcyorktown.uscg.mil/UTB/. Surfman trainers are<br />

encouraged to incorporate this course into their training program.<br />

B.1. Minimum<br />

Requirements for<br />

Operations and<br />

Training<br />

Meet the following requirements prior to commencing surf operations:<br />

(01) For surf operations or surf training, Surf Stations require two B-0<br />

surf-capable boats to ensure safety backup and/or self rescue<br />

capability.<br />

(02) A certified Surfman shall be onboard each boat.<br />

(03) A dedicated land-based observer shall maintain visual and radio<br />

contact with the boats at all times, and radio contact with the<br />

parent Station at all times. When unable to comply with this<br />

requirement due to geographic limitations, the Sector shall be<br />

notified.<br />

(04) Stations shall conduct a pre-brief (including elements of risk<br />

assessment) of the surf training plan prior to commencing<br />

training.<br />

(05) Boat crews shall be properly outfitted with personal protective<br />

equipment in accordance with References (f) and (o).<br />

(06) A handheld backup VHF-FM radio shall be carried onboard<br />

boat.<br />
