Chapter 1 – Station Organization and Watch-Standing<br />

G.1.a. Advantages The 1-in-4 duty rotation provides an average of 68 work hours (i.e., 42<br />

duty hours and 26 day work hours) and 100 hours of liberty each week,<br />

and provides the following advantages:<br />

(01) Minimizes potential that duty crews will exceed fatigue<br />

standards.<br />

(02) Minimizes unproductive work time (i.e., for messing and<br />

berthing).<br />

(03) Accommodates all-hands evolutions easily without recalling<br />

crew.<br />

(04) Station personnel can accomplish training and maintenance tasks<br />

while they are in a non-duty status.<br />

(05) The personal needs of the crew (e.g. to take care of family needs)<br />

can be easily accommodated during normal working hours.<br />

(06) The straight 1-in-4 duty rotation (i.e. no sliding weekends) does<br />

not allow for three-day weekends unless the member takes leave;<br />

duty standers can expect to have duty on at least two (of four)<br />

weekends every month.<br />

Disadvantages<br />

Sliding weekends can be used with a 1-in-4 duty rotation, but the<br />

potential for duty crews to exceed fatigue standards is significantly<br />

higher during what is, for most Stations, the busiest time of the duty<br />

week.<br />
