E.5.i. Coxswain<br />

The check-ride will be conducted by an experienced, certified Coxswain,<br />

Heavy Weather Coxswain, or Surfman from the BCEB. The evaluation<br />

should include drills involving boat type familiarization, boat operations,<br />

crew control, mission management, and the maturity and judgment<br />

necessary to perform as a boat Coxswain. Skills and attributes to observe<br />

include:<br />

(01) Departure planning.<br />

(02) Crew brief/debrief.<br />

(03) Area familiarization.<br />

(04) Navigation and piloting.<br />

(05) Plot and execute basic search patterns.<br />

(06) Boat handling.<br />

(07) Towing.<br />

(08) Person-in-the-water recovery.<br />

(09) Engineering casualty control procedures.<br />

(10) Judgment.<br />

(11) Leadership.<br />

(12) Use of rescue and survival gear.<br />

(13) Emergency procedures.<br />
