The U.S. Coast Guard oversees commercial vessel safety and operations
and hazardous material transport and enforces standards for domestic and
foreign flag vessels. The Coast Guard also provides a safeguard to the
nation’s ports, waterways, port facilities, vessels, persons, and property
in the vicinity of the port from accidental destruction, damage, loss,
injury, or environmental harm.
Various sections of Titles 14, 16, 33, 46, and 50 U.S.C. contain authority
to conduct the Coast Guard’s marine safety mission.
