MUSEUMS AND TOURISM: THE STUDY OFTHE HISTORICAL MUSEUM OF BELO HORIZONTE - MGMarcela Cougo 1 ; Nelson Antônio Quadros Vieira Filho 2 - BrasilAbstractThis article intends to contribute to the discussion of the relations between museums,cultural heritage and tourism, based on a case-study of the historical museum of thecity of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. More particularly, it aims tocharacterize the main policies and actions of revitalization which were developed inrelation to the Museu histórico Abílio Barreto (MhAB) since 1993, and to discuss itsrelation with tourism. The research methodology involved a bibliographical review onthe related themes of cultural heritage, cultural tourism, museums and the case of theMhAB, a documental research about this museum and a semi-structured interview withthe person in charge of its direction during the main period of analysis, aimed atidentifying, from the perspective of the museum management, the main factors,difficulties and challenges related to the revitalization actions which were undertaken,as well as understanding the relation between tourism and the MhAB. It is concludedthat the revitalization process carried out since 1993 has transformed the MhAB intothe main museum of Belo Horizonte and a national example of an institutioncompromised with a new concept of museums, innovating and straitening itsrelationship with the local community and fostering its role as a cultural centerdedicated to the history and memory of Belo Horizonte, through actions of research,information, education and leisure. In spite of the potential importance of the museumas a tourist attraction and of tourism as a source of resources for the activities ofmuseums, tourism is not yet properly considered by the museum´s management. It issuggested that the MhAB should research and know more about its tourist demand andadjust its activities in order to attend better the needs of tourists and improve itspotential as a tourist attraction. It is also suggested some actions which could foster thedevelopment of the relation between tourism and museums in general. A greaterdialogue between professionals and institutions related to museums and tourism areimportant to the planning of actions aimed at meeting the needs of both, communityand tourists.Keywords: tourism, museums, heritage, Museu histórico Abílio BarretoResumoEste artigo pretende contribuir para a discussão das relações entre museus,patrimônio e turismo a partir de um estudo de caso sobre o museu histórico da cidadede Belo Horizonte, no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil.
