The questionnaire related to forensic aspects included the education level, awareness of sports<br />

law, tendency of fighting in private life and opinion of the athletes on risky sports (Table 3).<br />

Results<br />

None of the interviewees had witnessed a death case of any taekwondo athlete. However,<br />

experienced serious trauma rates were considerably high in the lower extremities (49.88%),<br />

orofacial region (31.11%), and upper extremities (9.99%), respectively (Table 4, 5) This<br />

time–loss injuries were 25.5 % among all competitors and 42.6% among all injuries.<br />

All of the athletes were using some compulsory protectors like head protectors, groin guard,<br />

trunk protector, forearm and wrist protectors. 83 (92.22%) of the athletes were aware of the<br />

mouthguards and only 10 (11.1%) of them used these devices actually. Athletes’ knowledge<br />

about sports law was limited and 66.7% of them had a tendency to street fights (Table 6).<br />

The most frequently injured body part was lower leg knee, ankle, hand upper leg, the foot,<br />

and elbow.<br />

Discussion<br />

There are several studies reporting the injury rates of the body parts of taekwondo athletes 17-<br />

20,24,31 Compared with similar data available for seven men's sports (wrestling, American<br />

football, football (soccer), ice hockey, gymnastics, lacrosse and baseball) and six women's<br />

sports (gymnastics, football (soccer), field hockey, lacrosse, softball and volleyball), the<br />

taekwondo competition injury rate ranked third in men's sports behind wrestling (31.75/1,000<br />

A-E) and American football (30.97/1,000 A-E). For women, taekwondo also ranked third<br />

behind gymnastics (18.09/1,000 A-E) and football (soccer) (15.31/1,000 A-E). 31 It has been<br />

estimated that players of contact sports have a 10% chance per playing season of sustaining an<br />

injury and up to a 50% chance of injury in their playing career. 3,9 However, the dental trauma<br />

incidence was not investigated comprehensively. Furthermore no report about the injuries of
