PE than the U.S. students (5). Another study revealed that European American and<br />

African Americans shared the favourable attitudes with regard to likes and dislikes of PE<br />

(9). These studies also indicated that there was a close relationship between attitude and<br />

participation. Not surprisingly, students with positive attitudes seem to have fun in PE (9)<br />

and to participate in leisure-time exercises (5); whereas students with negative attitudes<br />

seem to avoid physical activity participation (9). The results of these studies have a great<br />

potential to establish a framework of students’ attitudes characteristics in order to<br />

increase physical activity participation in school and out of school.<br />

Professionals in the field of education have an increasing interest in attitudes<br />

toward many psychological and pedagogical phenomena (9). The attitudinal studies<br />

widespread in developing countries for improving quality and quantity of PE have based<br />

on different approaches contributing to PE curriculum in many ways. The majority of<br />

investigations examining perceptions, beliefs and attitudes of students in different nations<br />

tend to provide a broad perspective for describing problems of students’ attitudes.<br />

However, few studies have been conducted assessing attitudes of students toward PE in<br />

Turkey. The purposes of the study, therefore, were a) to determine the attitudes of<br />

primary school students toward PE, and b) to examine the relationships among attitudes<br />

of students and students’ gender, students’ academic achievement in school, educational<br />

level and occupation of their parents.
