African Americans shared the favourable attitudes with regard to likes and dislikes of PE
(9). These studies also indicated that there was a close relationship between attitude and
participation. Not surprisingly, students with positive attitudes seem to have fun in PE (9)
and to participate in leisure-time exercises (5); whereas students with negative attitudes
seem to avoid physical activity participation (9). The results of these studies have a great
potential to establish a framework of students’ attitudes characteristics in order to
increase physical activity participation in school and out of school.
Professionals in the field of education have an increasing interest in attitudes
toward many psychological and pedagogical phenomena (9). The attitudinal studies
widespread in developing countries for improving quality and quantity of PE have based
on different approaches contributing to PE curriculum in many ways. The majority of
investigations examining perceptions, beliefs and attitudes of students in different nations
tend to provide a broad perspective for describing problems of students’ attitudes.
However, few studies have been conducted assessing attitudes of students toward PE in
Turkey. The purposes of the study, therefore, were a) to determine the attitudes of
primary school students toward PE, and b) to examine the relationships among attitudes
of students and students’ gender, students’ academic achievement in school, educational
level and occupation of their parents.
