Instructor interviews were applied between in their institution and expert<br />

interviews were made during an Archery Championship. The interview<br />

instrument with instructors and experts had four main headings:<br />

1. What are your purposes in teaching archery to beginners?<br />

2. What kind of equipments do you use during teaching basic archery<br />

skills?<br />

3. How do you organize the course content?<br />

4. How do you evaluate the student improvement?<br />

b. Observation Strategy and Participants<br />

Observation was made during the Archery Championship. There were about<br />

200 archers taking part to this competition. Five male and five female archers<br />

were observed during the competition. All of the behaviours were video-taped<br />

and manually recorded during a single shot.<br />

2.1. Student Interview Results<br />

All of the students who are taking Archery course informed that they have chosen this<br />

course because of their interest in archery. They had some ideas about sport archery<br />

before taking the course. Yet, they did not have deep information. They knew archery as<br />

an individual sport and that bow and arrows were used to hit the target. Students who are<br />

taking this course supposed to learn theoretical knowledge on archery and the basic<br />

fundamentals of shooting. One of the students especially expressed that he wanted to<br />

practice on shooting during the course. They were not interested in archery history.<br />

Students do not believe that they can reach their purposes related with archery by<br />

taking PES 320 Archery Theory and Practice course. They needed to take preintermediate<br />

and intermediate course to learn shooting properly. One of the respondents<br />

said “I do not think I can reach my purposes only by taking this course, because if you<br />

want to be successful in any sport you need to spend more time than a semester.”<br />

Students were asked about the effects that influence their success in archery<br />

course. The students acknowledged that practice time in the course was not enough to<br />

learn archery shooting techniques. Also, one of the students expressed that lack of<br />

archery equipment was a serious limitation for their success. One of the interviewees<br />

said “I wish we had a bow and at least six arrows for each student in the course.”<br />

Students were also asked about the difficulties in performing archery techniques.<br />

They pointed out some difficulties in drawing the 16 kg bow. They said if we had<br />

stronger shoulder and arms, we could draw the bow easily. One of the students said, “If<br />

we had some strengthening programs, especially for shoulder area, it would be easier to<br />

draw the bow.”<br />

The interviewees were asked what the order of teaching would be if they taught<br />

archery to beginners. Most of the students expressed that the focus of the information on<br />

archery equipment should be the first step in teaching archery skills. Then, an instructor<br />

should teach basic shooting techniques. However, they were not able to give detailed<br />

information about the order of the teaching procedures.<br />

The last question directed to the students was related with the evaluation<br />

approaches that can be used in any archery course. They talked about the importance of<br />

technique to hit the target. They said the evaluation should be made not only by looking<br />

at the point that a student gather but also their shooting technique should be considered.
