a. The Client: There were basically two clients in this study; Educational
Sciences and Physical Education and Sports Departments at Middle East
Technical University.
b. The Audience: Audiences can be identified as all people who were affected by
the study in some ways. These were; instructors teaching archery to beginners,
archery coaches who accept new archers to their clubs, and archery course
participants.
c. The Target Population: The target population means the people about whom
information were collected and analyzed. In this sense, the target population
for the needs assessment for data gathering process was the instructors in
different universities, archery coaches in different archery clubs, archers in
different skill levels, and the students who are taking the PES 320 Archery
Theory and Practice Course.
2. The coordinator of the study was the author himself who is the instructor of PES
320 Archery Theory and Practice Course.
3. The purpose of this study was to design beginning archery course.
4. The data gathering procedures were as follows;
a. Interview: Interviews were made with instructors in different universities,
archery coaches in different archery clubs, and archers in different skill levels
to organize course content.
b. Observation: Observations were made during archery competition again for
the purpose of content organization.
c. Literature Review: The literature related with archery was reviewed before
starting the data gathering process.
5. Participants and Instruments
a. Interview Participants and Instruments
Interview questions were prepared for the students who had been taking PES
320 Archery Theory and Practice course and for archery instructors, who were
teaching archery in different universities and archery coaches or experts in
different archery clubs.
12 students participated in this interview. 3 of the respondents were
interviewed individually. Other nine students were interviewed in a group
meeting after one of the sessions in the Sport hall. Student interview
instrument has nine questions with its alternative questions and prompts. The
students who have currently been taking PES 320 Archery Theory and
Practice course were asked about the reason of choosing this course, their
archery knowledge and expectations from this course. Students also were
questioned about their opinions about the factors affecting their achievements
during the course, difficulties that they faced. “How they teach archery to
beginners” and “how they evaluate the students’ achievements” were other
questions in the interview instrument.
Three instructors, who were teaching beginning archery course in their
institutions, from three different universities (Age X = 29 ± 3.45) and three
archery coaches or experts, who were teaching in both their sports club and
National Archery teams (Age X = 45 ± 6.23) were involved in this study.
Interviews with the instructors and coaches were conducted individually.
