a. The Client: There were basically two clients in this study; Educational<br />

Sciences and Physical Education and <strong>Spor</strong>ts Departments at Middle East<br />

Technical University.<br />

b. The Audience: Audiences can be identified as all people who were affected by<br />

the study in some ways. These were; instructors teaching archery to beginners,<br />

archery coaches who accept new archers to their clubs, and archery course<br />

participants.<br />

c. The Target Population: The target population means the people about whom<br />

information were collected and analyzed. In this sense, the target population<br />

for the needs assessment for data gathering process was the instructors in<br />

different universities, archery coaches in different archery clubs, archers in<br />

different skill levels, and the students who are taking the PES 320 Archery<br />

Theory and Practice Course.<br />

2. The coordinator of the study was the author himself who is the instructor of PES<br />

320 Archery Theory and Practice Course.<br />

3. The purpose of this study was to design beginning archery course.<br />

4. The data gathering procedures were as follows;<br />

a. Interview: Interviews were made with instructors in different universities,<br />

archery coaches in different archery clubs, and archers in different skill levels<br />

to organize course content.<br />

b. Observation: Observations were made during archery competition again for<br />

the purpose of content organization.<br />

c. Literature Review: The literature related with archery was reviewed before<br />

starting the data gathering process.<br />

5. Participants and Instruments<br />

a. Interview Participants and Instruments<br />

Interview questions were prepared for the students who had been taking PES<br />

320 Archery Theory and Practice course and for archery instructors, who were<br />

teaching archery in different universities and archery coaches or experts in<br />

different archery clubs.<br />

12 students participated in this interview. 3 of the respondents were<br />

interviewed individually. Other nine students were interviewed in a group<br />

meeting after one of the sessions in the <strong>Spor</strong>t hall. Student interview<br />

instrument has nine questions with its alternative questions and prompts. The<br />

students who have currently been taking PES 320 Archery Theory and<br />

Practice course were asked about the reason of choosing this course, their<br />

archery knowledge and expectations from this course. Students also were<br />

questioned about their opinions about the factors affecting their achievements<br />

during the course, difficulties that they faced. “How they teach archery to<br />

beginners” and “how they evaluate the students’ achievements” were other<br />

questions in the interview instrument.<br />

Three instructors, who were teaching beginning archery course in their<br />

institutions, from three different universities (Age X = 29 ± 3.45) and three<br />

archery coaches or experts, who were teaching in both their sports club and<br />

National Archery teams (Age X = 45 ± 6.23) were involved in this study.<br />

Interviews with the instructors and coaches were conducted individually.
