equipment were not adequate in the public schools of Turkey (16, 12). Obviously, these<br />

factors seem to have an impact on students’ behaviour and attitudes.<br />

With respect to general attitudes of physical education, students with high level of<br />

academic achievement had a significantly more positive attitude than other students. This<br />

study also found no significant differences in attitudes toward PE and educational level<br />

and occupation of parents, although, the family environment providing several<br />

opportunities for parental influence (17). These findings might be explained from<br />

different perspectives. The first reason might be education system in Turkey. “Higher<br />

education is essentially conducted at universities and anyone wishing to enroll in any<br />

undergraduate program of the universities must take the university entrance examination<br />

either as a complete or partial prerequisite for placement. The examination consists of (a)<br />

The Student Selection Examination (OSS), and (b) The Foreign Language Examination<br />

(YDS). OSS comprises two tests. One of them is prepared to measure mainly the<br />

candidates’ verbal abilities, and the other, their quantitative abilities. Students are<br />

essentially evaluated on the basis of their performance on the examinations together with<br />

their academic achievement (grade-point averages) in high school” (18). For this reason,<br />

parents and teachers support their students to focus on academic achievement rather than<br />

physical education or other non-examination courses (5). They try to form their<br />

perceptions of student’s academic achievement according to school grades and<br />

standardized achievement test scores in the school setting. The second reason might be<br />

explained that most students are not aware of the benefits of PE in their total education.<br />

They do not know how to make a connection between PE and their academic<br />

achievement in the school. It seems to suggest that more support needs to be provided for
