aim of Turkish National PE curriculum has been to provide opportunities for developing<br />

both skill-related and health related components of students. However, it has been<br />

observed that the current PE program content could not attain either health-related<br />

objectives (12) or skill-related objectives (13, 14). As a result, students may not develop<br />

positive attitudes toward PE. Furthermore, negative attitudes might result from not<br />

enjoyable teaching methods, not providing a safe environment for risk taking or equal<br />

access for all students, or not the nature of the sport (4). For this reason, these factors may<br />

be investigated to clearly define in the school physical education programs by the<br />

researchers.<br />

Although, the differences between male and female students’ attitudes toward PE<br />

were statistically significant with respect to general attitudes, their mean scores were very<br />

close to each other. Different studies revealed that boys had more positive attitudes than<br />

girls (5, 7). On the other hand, Ryan et al. (2003) found the significant differences<br />

between attitudes and gender in favour of girls (9). The primarily reason of the findings<br />

might be that traditional activity based PE programs have been applied with the same<br />

way in all region of Turkey. Another reason might be that classroom teachers are<br />

responsible for PE lessons in many schools in the first level of primary education (14)<br />

and students meet the PE educators at the second level of primary education. It would<br />

therefore appear that girls and boys may have a little opportunity to develop positive<br />

attitudes toward PE in the school period. Additionally, large number of students,<br />

inadequate facilities and poor participation rates may be other typical hindrances to<br />

quality and quantity of PE (15). It was indicated that the numbers of sport facilities and
