The effect of mental training on the skill learning swimming in the students of<br />

physical education<br />

Definitions and Introduction:<br />

One of the goals of applied sport psychology is to investigate human performance (SCHILLING, 1992) in<br />

order to build up mental toughness (SCHORI, 1989), to stabilize and to enhance sport performance<br />

(SEILER, 1992) through a balance between the physical and the mental dimension of performance.<br />

In today's sport psychology the term mental training means "the formal, structured application of<br />

psychological techniques to the enhancement of sports performance.<br />

Other terms such as psychological preparation or mental preparation are also used, but mental training<br />

appears to be the most popular.<br />

This is perhaps because it implies processes and objectives similar to those with which sports performers<br />

are very familiar through their use of the term physical training.<br />

In the other hands, some countries literatures were restricted to the mental training of motor skills.<br />

Doing mental training in sport in this sense means that the athlete thinks about a skill and goes through<br />

the movement in his or her head. There is a mental image or picture, an imagery, which a person looks at<br />

or sees in his or her mind.<br />

In sport psychology and in coaching mental training in the restricted (narrower) or broader (wider)<br />

perspective is an often-used expression .In the last years many articles and books on mental training<br />

were published.<br />

Athletes and coaches indeed know about it, but so far they do not integrate mental training in their daily<br />

training programs.<br />

The evaluation of mental activities in the training process – not only in athletic training – has progressed<br />

rather faster .It is because the field of research encompasses very different areas such as sport<br />

psychology, exercise physiology, cognitive psychology, psychometrics, psychophysiology or motor<br />

learning.<br />
