ows shooting gloves and finger tabs, arm guards, quivers, bow sights, accessories etc.,
and understanding rules and scoring procedures. The other overlapping part was the basic
safety considerations during archery shooting. All of the instructors involved the safety
consideration in their courses. All of the instructors mentioned the steps of shooting.
They all involved teaching shooting techniques in their archery courses for beginners.
The second question that was directed to the instructors was related with their
teaching strategies of basic archery techniques. All of the instructors advised to use
inductive approach in teaching archery skills. They first started teaching archery with
stance position. They all said stance position should be explained and taught carefully.
Then, the holding position was advised to teach. One of the respondents said, “For me,
stance position comes first. Then, I teach how to hold the bow.”
Like two of the expert who defended inductive approaches, instructors aimed to
teach draw, full draw, and aiming positions as third, fourth, and fifth steps respectively.
All of the instructors advised to nock the arrow at this point of archery teaching. They
intended to teach release and follow through techniques with the existence of arrow on
the bow.
The third question was “what kind of equipment do you use during teaching
archery shooting?” They advised to use elastic ropes during teaching stance, holding,
drawing, full draw, and release techniques. They said it would give the chance to the
learners to practice archery techniques on their own in all of the places. They do not need
to have bows, arrows, target etc. One of the instructors said, “I give homework to my
students to make practices with the supplementary elastic equipment. It makes my job
easy.” Moreover, the instructors paid special attention to use arm guard at the beginning
stages of shooting. They said if one does not use arm guard during the shots, the
bowstring would hit the elbow and it would make harm on the sportsmen’s arms. Like
experts, instructors also advised to use lighter bows during the beginning stages.
The final question was related with the evaluation approaches that they use in
making decisions about their learners’ improvements. The main evaluation approach
among the instructors was shooting from a given distance with a given number of arrows.
Students were supposed to gather scores from this distance. One of the instructors
supposed, “Students should be able to hit a score of at least 200 out of 36 arrows at 20
meters on a 122 cm target face.” The other parts in the evaluation approaches of
instructors are summarized below: Students;
1. Know parts of a basic standard recurve bow and arrows, and archery
terminology.
2. Obtain general knowledge on different types of bows, arrows and bowstrings.
3. Are able to do basic bow tuning using a basic standard recurve bow.
4. Obtain knowledge on all safety aspects of archery including how to set up a
safe shooting range.
One of the instructors also advised to use checklists for process evaluation in
archery shooting. He said, “Looking at only the scores at the target will give an idea
about the student improvement, but it will not show the strengths and weaknesses of the
technical characteristics of the learner.”
