enciclopedie di pietra. Adora soprattutto i "testi" di medicina: massi
levigati con incise impressionanti lezioni di anatomia. Interventi a cuore
aperto, parti cesarei, trapianti di cervello. "Guardate bene - esorta
paziente -. L'autore di questi graffiti conosceva perfettamente le più
complesse tecniche operatorie. In circolazione extracorporea".
La segretaria-perpetua si palesa dall'ombra per avvisarlo che un'altra
comitiva attende di entrare. Il professore fa segno di lasciarla attendere.
La verità non ha mai fretta. E lui non deve convincere nessuno, soltanto
esporre dei fatti, in forma di sassi: "Riflettete: il più grande genio del
Novecento, chi era? Albert Einstein, bravissimi. E che significa ein
stein?" Una pietra, naturalmente. Javier Cabrera s'illumina e congeda i
visitatori delle quattro pomeridiane con un sorriso vittorioso, pronto a
ricominciare con quelli delle 6: "Questa è una biblioteca, una biblioteca
i cui libri sono le pietre".

"Who on earth would believe such foolishness? Alas, 36 million people
bought his silly books [namely, Erich von Däniken books*].
The Gold of the Gods dwells at some length on the curious Stones of
Ica, on which, apparently, are prehistoric carvings showing such things
as heart transplants, rocket ships, and television. There is a small
"museum" in Ica, located on the coast of Peru south of Lima. The town
is mportant as the location of genuine artifacts of pre-Inca times, as is
Nazca, somewhat farther south, where von Däniken "discovered" the
Nazca "lines".
The museum in Ica is an amateur affair, run by a dentist. The fakes are
rather amateurish, too. I say this because my experience in Peru has
acquainted me with some of the finest phony pottery and grave articles
that have ever been made. Artisans there use precisely the same
methods employed by the ancients in making their pottery, and since
most of their product is copied directly from the fine work produced by
those little-recognized masters of long ago, it is almost impossible to
detect the fakery unless you know a few tricks of the trade. But the
Stones of Ica have been the subject of several books, all printed in Peru
and all of which take the rocks quite seriously. But those who deal in
