°C. This is supported by meteorological data recorded in Benin City (Figure 4.1)
from results taken over the year of 1999 and 2000 showing an average
temperature of 26.9 ºC (NIPP, 2010) and 27.6 ºC in 2009 (Atedhor, Odjugo and
Uriri, 2010) . Further review of data illustrated average temperatures of 25 °C
in the wet season and 28 °C during the dry season (Uyigue and Agho, 2006).
The temperatures recorded during the wet season survey (Table 4.1) all fall
within these literature values.
4.3.2 Rainfall and Humidity
According to the Federal Department of Meteorological Services average
monthly rainfall levels for Benin City and adjacent areas during 1999 and 2000
were 187.5 and 186.7 mm respectively. However due to the pronounced wet
and dry seasons, in 1999 the monthly mean rainfall varied between 9.4 and
472.5 mm. In 2000 the monthly mean rainfall varied between 4.0 and 351.2 mm.
More recently in 2011, the mean monthly precipitation levels have been
recorded at an average of 97.0 mm 2011 (thus far). This is considerably lower
than that observed in the years of 1999 and 2000, however, between April and
June and between September and October the average precipitation levels were
recorded between 106 and 278 mm. This relatively high level of rainfall is
directly related to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean which complements the
rainfall driven by the ITD zone (NIPP, 2010).
