Description of mitigation<br />

• Ensure location of storage areas for hazardous substances<br />

on hardstanding (or bunded, if suitable) to prevent<br />

potential contamination, including areas around gauges,<br />

pumps, sumps and loading /unloading areas;<br />

• Diesel storage tanks and components to meet<br />

international standards for structural design and<br />

integrity;<br />

• Provide cathodic protection inside steel tanks and piping,<br />

if required.<br />

• Periodic inspection for corrosion and integrity of storage<br />

tanks, pipes and components and regular maintenance<br />

pipes, seals, connectors and valves and other<br />

components.<br />

• All tanks to be equipped with alarms, automatic shut-off<br />

devices and catch basins.<br />

• Construct stormwater channels and oilwater separators<br />

in diesel storage, handling and transfer areas.<br />

• Develop Spill Control and Response plans.<br />

• Monthly monitoring programme of effluent released<br />

from the site.<br />

• Monthly groundwater monitoring, especially for<br />

hydrocarbon leaks.<br />
