Historically, Idunmwowina-Urho-Nisen community were the carvers and<br />

carpenters for the Oba of Benin’s Palace. The three shrines/sacred sites of<br />

greatest significance to the community are:<br />

• Egua Edion (literally meaning Elders meeting place)<br />

• Shrine to the Guild of carvers<br />

• The Sacred Groove – Ugbo”Ebo<br />

In Nigeria, the cultural significance of these sites varies depending on who<br />

uses them. While some might be significant at a national or state level and<br />

thus are well known across the state, others are important at a community<br />

level (ie the entire community worships at these), or at a family or individual<br />

level. The tables and text above list the most significant sacred sites for the<br />

communities as a whole. In the project area, these tend to be those found in<br />

the centre of the communities or close-by.<br />

In addition to the cultural sites mentioned in the text above, there are a<br />

number of other sacred/religious sites that are found on the plot to be<br />
