Urho-Nisen-Urho-Nisen, which will be affected by the Project activities. They<br />

are in Omagbae South Ward Six of the Uhunmwode LGA in <strong>Edo</strong> State,<br />

Nigeria.<br />

This baseline section provides information for <strong>Edo</strong> State, the Uhunmwode<br />

LGA and the local communities in the vicinity of the Project. In order to<br />

provide further context to the social baseline, some commentary is also<br />

provided at a national level.<br />

The data reflected in this ESIA baseline is mostly quantitative and based on<br />

the outcome of the qualitative surveys carried out (ie Focus Group<br />

discussions). A baseline based on the outcomes of the quantitative data<br />

surveys is documented in the baseline section of the associated Resettlement<br />

Action Plan (RAP) Section 4.<br />

5.2 METHODOLOGY<br />

A combination of research methods were used to collect socio-economic data,<br />

including the following:<br />

• Review of secondary data;<br />

• Reconnaissance survey to identify all communities that will be directly or<br />

indirectly affected and to alert communities leaders and residents to the<br />

Project and to the proposed studies;<br />

• In-depth interviews with community leaders of the identified communities<br />

(traditional leaders, women leaders, religious leaders and youth leaders);<br />

• Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with groups of adult males, adult<br />

females and youths;<br />

• Direct observations; and<br />

• Participatory tools used during FGDs, specifically community mapping,<br />

Venn diagram and paired needs ranking and case studies formulation.<br />

Table 5.1 assesses the range of methodologies used in the social baseline study.<br />
