5.7.4 Waste Management<br />

National statistics indicate that standards of sanitation are higher in <strong>Edo</strong> State<br />

than elsewhere in Nigeria. Approximately 22 percent of households in <strong>Edo</strong><br />

State have access to a water closet (most served by an overhead tank rather<br />

than from piped water) compared with 15 percent at the national level, while<br />

51 percent of households have access to a pit latrine (see Figure 5.9). In Orior-<br />

Osemwende, 56 percent of households have water closets in the home and 39<br />

percent of households have access to a pit latrine.<br />

According to information gathered in the study area, the three communities<br />

stated that there are several ways that they dispose of their household waste<br />

including burning their refuse or waste or dumping it in improvised landfills.<br />

5.7.5 Access to Education<br />

In 2009, 61 percent of Nigeria’s population (aged above 15) was literate, with<br />

an even breakdown between men and women (World Bank, 2011). Net<br />

primary school enrolment in the country is 21.7 million, or roughly 60 percent,<br />

and girls make up 46 percent of the primary school student body (World<br />

Bank, 2011).<br />

The 2006 State Census results indicate that 80 percent of men and 72 percent of<br />

women in <strong>Edo</strong> State were literate, putting the state above the national average.<br />

Approximately 18 percent of men and 25 percent of women over the age of six<br />
