Ihe following is an Account which John<br />

Everett, a Highwayman, gave of himfelf<br />

fome few Days before he was executed.<br />

IW A S born at Hitchln in Hvi-iffonf/ibire of credible "<br />

Parents, my FatJier being poffeiled of an Eftate of<br />

300 /. per Jmi. and in my Minority I was care-<br />

flilly inftrufted in feveral Parts of Learning neceiTary to<br />

qualify me for any manner of Bufmefs. I was, when<br />

at proper Age, put Apprentice to a Sale/man, that Bu-<br />

finefs being originally intended forme, and my good<br />

indulgent Father gave to my Mailer, as an Apprentice<br />

Fee 50 Guineas, befides his providing for me neceflary ,^<br />

Cloathing ; but before my Time was expir'd I quitted<br />

my Matter, and went into Flamters, (being pre/Ted) and<br />

was in the late Wars there, in feveral Sieges and Battles,<br />

and acquired by a difcreet Behaviour, the Love and<br />

Friendship of anoil of the commanding Officers, and<br />

after i fo diftinguifh'd myfelf, I was railed to the Place<br />

of a Serjeant, in the Hon. C^enera] BOVJ'S Regiment of<br />

Foot; and on my Return from Flanders into England,<br />

the Regiment was quarter'd at Worcefter, and there I<br />

purchafed my Difcharge, on wJiich I took a Tour up<br />

to Londm, and purchafed the Place of an Officer of<br />

White-Chapel Court, in which Station I continued up-<br />

wards of feven Years, and being of an eafy and good-<br />

natur'd Difpofition, in Compailion to feveral diflrefled<br />

Objefts which came in my Way, I took feveral People's<br />

Words too often, after I had arrefted them, the Confe-<br />

quences of which obliged me to quit my Place; but be-<br />

ing clofely fued for Debts brougJit on me by thofe<br />

Misfortunes, by one Thomas Charlfivorth, a Sollicitor<br />

in White-Chapel, who before had been fe'emingly my<br />

Friend,
