him with having betrayed them ; and yet it fcems plain
too, that when they went they took it for granted that
they fliould be made Prifbners, by their Exchimations
one to another, and by their fliaring the Money among
them, as is faid above.
It was indeed a moft agreeable Sight to fee fuch a
Crew of defcerate Fellows fo tamely furrender to a few
*]mofl naked Countrymen, and to fee them fo circum-
vented by one Gentleman, that they were rendered
quite ufelefs to themfelves, and to tiieir own Delive-
ranre; the \^'ant of a Boat was as mucii to them as an
aftual Imprifonmcnt, nay, they were indeed in Prifbn
in their Ship, nor was they able to ilir one Way or
other. Hand or Foot j it was too cold to fwin over to
the Mand and feize the Boat, and if cisey had, unlell
they had done it immediately at firf, the People on
Shore would have been too ftrong ir,r them, fo that
they were as fecure on Board the Si.jp, as to any Ef-
cape they could have made, as they were afterwards in
the Cmidcmned-Hold in Newgate.
Agzin, never were People more foolifhly circum-
vented when they had a Boat and Conveniencies, for
had they gone on Shore then, while they had a Boat,
tho' it was but their fmall Boat, yet going at twice,
twenty, or five and twenty Men of them, they might
have repaired and launched Mr. Fea'i great Boat in
fpite of all he could have done to hinder it, and then,
if they could not have got their Ship off, they might
foon have found means to get a bigger Boat on the
Coaft either of Scotland or England, and getting on
Shore in the Night in any convenient Part of England,
might have diJperfed, and mixt themfelves among the
People, and made an effedual Efcape.
Buftheir End was apparently at hand, Juftice was
ready for them, their Crimes had ripened them for the
Gallows, and the Gallows claim'd them, their Time
_was come, and it was not in their Power to avoid
it.
