tin the Water and Provifions which were promifed,
fliould come on Board.
It is impoffible to conceive the Confternation and
Surprize the Portuguefe Gentry were in, nor is it very
decently to be exprefl'ed ; the poor Governour was K)
much more than half dead with the Fright, that he
really befoulM himfelf in a piteous manner, and the reft
were in no better Condition ; they trembled, cry'd,
begg'd, crofied themfelves, and faid their Prayers as
Men going to Execution ; but 'twas all one, they were
told flatly the Captain was not to be trifled with, that
the Ship was in want of Provifions, and they would
have them, or they would carry them all away ; they
were however well enough treated, except the Reftraint
of their Perfons, and were often a&ed to refrelh them-
felves, but they would neither eat or drink any more all
the while they ftay'd on Board, which was till the next
Day in the livening, when to their great SatisfeSiori
they faw a great Boat come off from the Fort, and
which came direftly on Board with feven Buts of Wa-
ter, a Cow and a Calf, and a good number of Fowls.
When the Boat came on Board, and had deliver'd
the Stores, Captain Gow complimented the Governour
and his Gentlemen, and difchargM them, to their great
Joy ; and befides difcharging them, he gave them in
return for the Provifions they brought, two Cerons of
Bees Wax, and fir'd them three Guns at their g^ing
away.
Having had no better Succefs in this out of the way
run to the Maderas, they refolv'd to make the bed of
their Way back again to the Coaft of Spain or Portu-
gal; they accordingly left Porto Santa the next Morn-
ing, with a fair Wind, Handing direftly for Cape St.
Vincent, or the Southward Cape.
They had not been upon the Coaft of 5/i«i« above
two or three Days before they met with a Ne-ixt England
Ship, Crofs, Commander, laden with Slaves, and
bound for Lisbon, and being to load there with Wine
for Lcmdo/i j this was a Prize alfo of no Value to them,
and.
