Changes in endogenous cytokinin contents induced by water stress
and rehydration
Key words: abscisic acid - active CK - inactive CK - cis-derivatives of zeatin - CK phosphates
- French bean - maize - relative water content -storage CK - sugar beet - tobacco.
Summary
With the aim to contribute to elucidation of the role of cytokinins (CK) in plant responses to
stresses, their endogenous contents were followed during water stress and subsequent rehydration.
Relative water content RWC decreased during water stress to 65 - 75 % and increased again after
rehydration. The content of abscisic acid increased during water stress and remained high also after
rehydration. In leaves of French bean, maize, sugar beet and tobacco different total CK content as
well as spectrum of individual CK were found in control plants as well as during water stress. In
control plants the highest total CK content was observed in bean and lowest in maize. In bean plants
storage CK were dominant, while in tobacco inactive CK and in sugar beet and maize all CK groups
were present in comparative amounts. The contents of CK increased during water stress in all plant
species, the highest accumulation was observed in bean and maize. After rehydration CK contents
decreased and in sugar beet and maize even to values lower than in control plants.
