Seed germination of selected summer intercrops in conditions of water
stress

Summary
Sufficient water supply in the soil is the limiting factor influencing the success of summer
intercrops growing. In laboratory tests there was measured the influence of water stress on
seed germination of selected plant species which can be used as summer intercrops.
Germination of following species: Lolium multiflorum, Lolium perenne, Phacelia
tanacetifolia, Brassica napus, Trifolium incarnatum and Triforium subterraneum was
evaluated in water and in PEG 6000 water solution giving water potential of –0.2; -0.5 and –
1.0 MPa for 18 days (20°C, 16 h photoperiod). In the water and in PEG solution –0.2 MPa
germinating seeds were first observed in Phacelia tanacetifolia. Under the water potential –
0.5 and –1.0 MPa the highest germination rate was obtained by Lolium multiflorum and
Lolium perenne. When solution with water potential –1.0 MPa was used, seeds started to
germinate 10 th day after the germination test began.
