Summary
Medicinal plants under changing environmental conditions
Key words: medicinal plants – primary a secondary metabolites – toxic metals – hyperaccumulation –
tolerance
Medicinal plants are presented as the plants producing specific secondary metabolites used
not only in traditional phytotherapy but also in phytoremediation technology and
phytofortification. Some of them [e.g. Hypericum perforatum (L.) and Matricaria recutita
(L.)] belong to the hyperaccumulators of cadmium (toxic metal and cumulative poison) which
can uptake and allocate into the root and shoot relative high concentration of Cd.
Additionally, the effect of Cd on structure, biochemical, physiological as well as production
processes is analysed. The replacement of the term heavy metals by biologically and
chemically significant classification of metal ions (Class Cclass B and Borderline metals) is
also explained. It is mentioned that above-mentioned species possess additive mechanism of
tolerance against Cd what was related to the sequestration of cadmium ions by specific
secondary metabolites (hypericin pseudohypericin, kvercetin, apigenin) produced in this
plants.
