The changes in photosynthetic characteristics of tobacco leaves in two<br />

consecutive stages of TMV infection<br />

We compared two successive stages of infection by tobacco mo<strong>sa</strong>ic virus, the first in the stadium of<br />

vein clearing and the second when two different regions, i.e. light- and dark- green islands in the<br />

infected leaves were apparent and symptoms were fully developed. The chlorophyll and carotenoid<br />

contents and ratio of chlorophyll a/b decreased with progression of infection and were the lowest in<br />

light-green islands. The maximum quantum yield of PS 2 photochemistry F V /F M was decreased in a<br />

row from first stage, DGI and LGI. The <strong>sa</strong>me is true for the ratio of quantum yields of<br />

photochemical and concurrent non-photochemical processes in PS 2 F V /F 0 . The decrease of<br />

effective quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion in infected leaves was not so uniform,<br />

the highest value was observed in dark-green islands. Generally, the most marked impairment of<br />

photosynthetic apparatus was developed in light-green islands.<br />
