Study of the changes of heavy metals toxicity on plant growth
Key words: ecotoxicity, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, chromium
Summary
The sensitivity of 2 basic inhibitory tests of toxicity was compared: 1/ test of growth
inhibition on germinating ability of white mustard (Sinapis alba L.), 2/ test of growth inhibition of
freshwaterweed (Scenedesmus subspicatus). The values of inhibitory concentration IC 50 were
measured. Heavy metals toxicity (iron, copper, zinc, nickel and chromium) were also analyzed .
Detected toxicity by freshwaterweed increased in following order: the most toxic element was
nickel (IC 50 = 0,122 mg/l); chromium, zinc, copper were less toxic and the least toxicity had iron
(IC 50 = 3,578 mg/l). Another results were reached by seeds of Sinapis alba. The most toxic was
chromium (IC 50 = 11,44 mg/l), less toxic were copper, zinc and iron. It is suprising that the least
level of toxicity was measured at nickel (IC 50 = 75,62 mg/l).
