The influence of cold stress on the proline metabolism in wheat
Key words: cold stress – proline metabolism – glutamate kinase – spring wheat
Summary
Many plants accumulate proline in response to abiotic and biotic stresses (water
stress, low and high temperature, salinity, toxic metals, pathogen). The enzyme glutamate
kinase catalyses the first step of proline biosynthesis. The effect of low temperature on the
activity glutamate kinase and chlorophyll content in spring wheat (cv.Sandra) was studied in
a pot experiment. The activity of the glutamate kinase was determined by the modified
hydroxamate method. Chlorophyll content was assessed spectrophotometrically from acetonic
extract. The activity of glutamate kinase grew up to 159,5 % (5 °C) and 111,4 % (10 °C) in
comparison with the control plants. Chlorophyll content was decreased.
