Cierto amigo académiconos señalaba hace tiempo a dos filósofas lo muy a gusto que se encontraba ennuestra compañía. Cómo le preguntamos la razón, respondió sin un titubeo: «Sifuerais dos hombres, con lo que valéis, seríais insoportables». Todavía nos dura elasombro. Por lo visto, nuestros saberes permaneciendo los mismos, nuestros egoshabrían sufrido una trasmutación por tenerlos y haberlos adquirido. Los varonesde esos círculos, según este referente, serían ególatras, impositivos y sumamenteagresivos; de ahí su triunfo. A las mujeres no les está permitido mostrar ningunade tales condiciones, si es que las tienen. En consecuencia no hay peligro de quenos sumemos y, si el saber y la justicia se resienten, en cambio el reposo (varonil)aumenta. Así que el estatuto de «presencias amigas» se concede con benevolenciaa quienes, ni por pienso, se desea en el de competidores.Para las mujeres el saber, que con todo se les niega en el fondo, sigue siendocomo mucho ornato y en ellos «vida vivida»; nosotras lo llevamos bien en tantoque no vayamos con él a ninguna parte. Para embarcarse en la aventura del saberhay que tener primero derecho a billete y a las mujeres no se les vende. Hace untiempo, un siglo más o menos ya se ha dicho, que intentamos viajar hacia la isladel conocimiento aunque sea en chalupa; desde la patera vemos como pasan, bastanterelajados a veces, en barco conforme o yate algunos de los que calentaroncon nosotras las sillas de las mismas aulas. Creemos que remando más fuerte vamosa lograr acercar posiciones, pero nos damos de bruces contra las cifras. Por lovisto al territorio impresionante de esa isla sólo se puede acceder si ya se ha estadoantes, condición que, por género, seremos siempre incapaces de cumplir.¿Cabe pensar que nos estemos agobiando demasiado pronto? Si imagináramosla emergencia del talento de las mujeres con una imagen tectónica, a medidaque por debajo entraran más, no habría otra que ver aparecer una cada vez mássólida cima. Pero como eso no ocurre, sino que, bien al contrario, el número demujeres en las altas cumbres hace una década que, si ya era ridículo, todavía disminuye,hemos de suponer que en las tales cumbres hay mucho y continuadodesgaste producido por algún otro factor. La lluvia, el viento, el hielo, en fin, unaexagerada erosión levanta a casi todas las mujeres que afloran. Debería estudiarsede cerca ese proceso, porque ahora tenemos los números, pero no el método porel que se producen. Ahí permanece un interesante análisis para la microfísica delpoder: por cuáles procedimientos es apartado el talento femenino; cómo aún sucedeque los genios que tienen la imprevisión de nacer mujer se pierden para lahumanidad. Tenemos un resultado cualitativo, la excelencia, que depende estrechamentede maniobras cuantitativas, la sistemática abrasión. ¿Será, después detodo, la paridad, no únicamente un objetivo deseable, sino un remedio a tener encuenta? A la vista de lo que se va percibiendo, nadie puede descartar el uso de accionespositivas en esos ámbitos, ya que parecen poco proclives a solventar por símismos las inercias de poder heredadas.28
