Savanna Army Depot and after retiring in 1975 they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. His<br />
first wife, Elwyna “Winnie” was born September 11, 1909 in Dixon and was the<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Llewellyn W. and Charlotte Diona (Russell) Miller, she died May 10, 2006.<br />
Russell died July 19, 1988 in Phoenix; he was cremated and buried in Evergreen<br />
Cemetery.<br />

Hill, Stephen Elmer was born August 20, 1906 in Freeport, Illinois and was the son <strong>of</strong><br />
Melvin and Jeannie (Backus) Hill. He married Florence May Bowen on February 27,<br />
1929 in Rockford and seven children were born to this union: Donald Gene Hill,<br />
Melvin Walter Hill, Richard Arlan Hill, William Hill, Rosalie Carol (Hill) Munson,<br />
Karen JoAnne (Hill) Harkness, and Stephen Elmer Hill. Stephen had worked at<br />
National Lock Manufacturing in Rockford for 35 years when he retired in 1968. He and<br />
his wife later moved to <strong>Hanover</strong>. Stephen died March 9, 1999 and is buried in<br />
Evergreen Cemetery.<br />
Hires, Robert Dean was born January 27, 1926 in Dubuque, Iowa and was the son <strong>of</strong><br />
Joseph and Elma (Turnmeyer) Hires. He was a World War <strong>II</strong> U.S. Army Veteran.<br />
Robert graduated from Loras College, Dubuque, in 1949. Robert taught English and<br />
history at <strong>Hanover</strong> High School from 1951 until 1960. He later taught English at Loyola<br />
Academy in Wilmette, Illinois for more than 20 years. Every year Loyola Academy<br />
presents the Robert D. Hires Memorial Shakespeare Recitation Award to the most<br />
deserving student. Robert died January 23, 1993 in Wilmette and is buried in Mount<br />
Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque.<br />
Hirst, John “Jack” Osborne was born February 2, 1926 and was the son <strong>of</strong> Osborne<br />
“Obbie” E. and Remilda Hirst. He graduated from Galena High School in 1944 and<br />
from Loras College in 1948. He married Magdalen “Mag” L. Roth in 1949 and five<br />
children were born to this union: David Hirst, Susan Hirst, Steven Hirst, Michael Hirst,<br />
and Daniel Hirst. Jack taught history and was a coach at <strong>Hanover</strong> High School from<br />
1948 until 1955 and at Freeport Aquin High School from 1955 until 1957. He began<br />
teaching and coaching at Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin Public School, Wisconsin in 1957,<br />
and remained there until he retired. Jack died June 23, 1993 in Thiensville, Wisconsin<br />
and is buried in Resurrection Cemetery, Whitefish Bay<br />
Hitt, Sarah Jane (Crawford) was born November 25, 1901 in Carn, County<br />
Monaghan, Ireland and was the daughter <strong>of</strong> John and Sophia (Mills) Crawford. The<br />
family moved to the United States in March 1908 and settled in Rice Township. She<br />
graduated from <strong>Hanover</strong> High School in 1920. Sarah married James Hitt on November<br />
5, 1920 in Dubuque and three children were born to this union: James H. Hitt, Evelyn<br />
(Hitt) Weiler, and Lee S. Hitt. Sarah lived in Elizabeth most <strong>of</strong> her adult life. Her<br />
husband James died in November 1944 and Sarah died February 6, 1990. They are both<br />
buried in the Elizabeth Cemetery.<br />
Hockersmith, Jerry Lillard was born April 10, 1935 in New Albany, Indiana. He<br />
graduated from New Albany High School in 1953. He married Bessie A. Fisher on<br />
January 11, 1959 in West Palm Beach, Florida and six children were born to this union.<br />
Jerry worked at various jobs throughout his life. He was living in <strong>Hanover</strong> when he<br />
died February 28, 2010. Cremation rites were accorded.<br />
Hockman, Milton E. was born February 9, 1922 in Mount Carroll, Illinois and was the<br />
son <strong>of</strong> Roy L. and Emma M. Hockman. He lived in Carroll County for many years and<br />
later moved to Tucson, Arizona. Milton died November 26, 1989 in Tucson and is
