Smith, Doris Marguritte was born June 20, 1920 in Galena, Illinois and was the
daughter of George J. and Carrie E. (Bauer) Smith. She spent her early life in Galena
and for many years was a nurse in Elgin, Illinois. After retiring she spent several years
with her sister, Janaan Douvikas in Hanover. Doris died September 28, 2005.
Smith, Ella Mary (Paisley) was born April 30, 1890 in rural Hanover and was the
daughter of Alexander Pinkney and Cora Ella (Campbell) Paisley. She married John
Lewis Smith and three sons were born to this union: John Leland Smith and two other
sons who died in infancy. Ella died October 31, 1982 and is buried in Evergreen
Cemetery.
Smith, Frederick “Fred” Carl was born October 21, 1915 in Washington Township,
Carroll County, Illinois and was the son of Frederick Christian and Sophia Marie
(Saltow) Smith. Fred enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps at the Mississippi
Palisades State Park in 1934 and later worked on the CB& Q Railroad. He was a World
War II U.S. Army Veteran. Fred married Ursula Mary Ann Fishler on April 27, 1954 in
Savanna and three children were born to this union: Robert Carl Smith, Mary Ann
Smith, and Alice Marie Smith. The family moved from Savanna to Hanover in 1955
and Fred worked at the Savanna Army Depot for 37 years before he retired. Fred died
February 11, 2001 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
Smith, Jeanne (Klingberg) was born October 16, 1918 in Spring Valley, Illinois and
was the daughter of Arthur and Amelila Alice (Moeller) Klingberg. She married Donald
Frederick Smith on February 14, 1938 in Spring Valley and two children were born to
this union: Geoffrey Smith and Janine (Smith) Leonard. She was a beautician for 20
years. She lived in Hanover for a time before moving to Elizabeth. Jeanne died July 30,
1988 and is buried in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery, Dixon.
Smith, John Leland was born November 17, 1927 in Freeport, Illinois and was the son
of John Lewis and Ella Mary (Paisley) Smith. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946-
47. John married Norma Lucille Beyer on December 28, 1946 in Hanover and no
children were born to this union. He was the chief of the Programs and Control Office
at the Defense Ammunition Center & School at the Savanna Army Depot when he
retired in 1989 after working there for 40 years. He lived in Hanover for a number of
years before moving to Savanna. John died August 19, 1991 and is buried in St. John’s
Lutheran Cemetery, Massbach.
Smith, Lucille Jenny (Harter) was born October 12, 1918 in Galena, Illinois and was
the daughter of Winfred Francis and Angeline P. (Strong) Harter. She married
Raymond Smith on April 13, 1936 in Hanover. She had worked at Chestnut Mountain
Lodge for many years. Her husband Raymond died on June 3, 1981. She later moved
to Freeport and died there on June 20, 2002 and is buried in Lena Burial Park.
Smith, Myrtle Ann (McKinley) was born February 14, 1907 in Derinda Township, Jo
Daviess County and was the daughter of the Reverend John Marshall and Frances
Catherine (Parker) McKinley. She graduated from Hanover High School in 1925.
