School in 1923. Charles married Evelyn A. Peters on November 28, 1931 in Mt. Carroll<br />

and no children were born to this union. He was a World War <strong>II</strong> veteran and retired in<br />

1971 from the Savanna Army Depot, where he worked as a painter. Charles died<br />

February 8, 1986 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.<br />

St. John, Evelyn A. (Peters) was born September 2, 1909 in Dubuque, Iowa and was<br />

the daughter <strong>of</strong> John and Freda (Thiemig) Peters. She graduated from Dubuque Senior<br />

High School in 1927 and attended Bayless Business College, Dubuque. Evelyn married<br />

Charles Clive St. John on November 28, 1931 in Mt. Carroll and no children were born<br />

to this union. Evelyn was the secretary at the <strong>Hanover</strong> Woolen Mill until they closed<br />

and then worked as a cashier at the <strong>Hanover</strong> State Bank. Evelyn died October 11, 2007<br />

and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.<br />

St. John, Floris “Barney” LeVere was born January 23, 1913 in <strong>Hanover</strong> and was the<br />

son <strong>of</strong> William Louis and Mary Ann “Mame” (Chapman) St. John. He married Sue<br />

Margaret McMillian on October 18, 1935. She died February 11, 1941. Barney married<br />

Mary Ellen (Williams) Vaccaro on January 7, 1951 in Galena and they raised two sons:<br />

Jack Trent and Leo Michael Vaccaro. Floris was a maintenance repairman for Eaton<br />

Corporation before his retirement. He owned the Mill City Tap in <strong>Hanover</strong> from 1939<br />

until 1951. Barney died February 10, 1991 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.<br />

St. John, Mary Ellen (Williams) Vaccaro was born January 12, 1911 in Clinton, Iowa<br />

and was the daughter <strong>of</strong> Charles H. and Della Mae (Ekelberry) Williams. Mary had two<br />

sons: Jack Trent and Leo Michael Vaccaro. She married Floris “Barney” LeVere St.<br />

John on January 7, 1951 in Galena. The family lived in <strong>Hanover</strong> and Mary worked at<br />

the Eaton Corporation. Mary retired to Freeport, Illinois and died there on June 4, 2004.<br />

Stadel, Eleanor “Peg” Margaret (Speer) was born May 19, 1920 in <strong>Hanover</strong> and was<br />

the daughter <strong>of</strong> James Arthur and Florence Ann (Nesbitt) Speer. She graduated from<br />

<strong>Hanover</strong> High School in 1938. She married Elmer John Stadel on May 29, 1946 in<br />

<strong>Hanover</strong> and three children were born to this union: Susan Elizabeth (Stadel) Bronn,<br />

John David Stadel, and Lisa Marie Stadel who died in infancy in 1963. Peg was a<br />

secretary for more than ten years at the <strong>Hanover</strong> School and retired in 1978. Peg moved<br />

to Freeport. Peg died December 11, 1996 and is buried in Log Church Cemetery.<br />

Stadel, Elmer John was born June 29, 1921 in Scales Mound, Illinois and was the son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Paul Robert and Mollie (Winter) Stadel. He attended the University <strong>of</strong> Dubuque for<br />

two years then joined the U.S. Army Air Force during World War <strong>II</strong>. He completed his<br />

education after the war and graduated from Northwestern University. Elmer married<br />

Eleanor “Peg” Margaret Speer on May 29, 1946 and three children were born to this<br />

union: Susan Elizabeth (Stadel) Bronn, John David Stadel, and Lisa Marie Stadel who<br />

died in infancy in 1963. The family lived in <strong>Hanover</strong> and Elmer was an accountant at<br />

the Savanna Army Depot for 32 years. Elmer moved to Freeport. He died November<br />

19, 2008 and is buried in Log Church Cemetery.<br />

Stanger, Harry J. was born June 27, 1901 in Savanna, Illinois and was the son <strong>of</strong><br />

William L. and Mary Elizabeth (Storey) Stanger. He grew up in <strong>Hanover</strong> and later<br />

attended Bradley Technical School in Peoria. Harry married LaVerne B. Morrison on<br />

September 30, 1923 in Peoria. They lived in <strong>Hanover</strong> for a time and later in Savanna<br />

for a number <strong>of</strong> years. Harry died January 14, 1986 and is buried in Evergreen<br />

Cemetery.<br />
