Virtue, Sarah Katherine (White) was born April 9, 1900 in Monmouth, Illinois and<br />

was the daughter <strong>of</strong> Lucian and Mina L. (McCrery) White. She married Walter Irwin<br />

Virtue on August 21, 1928 in Monmouth and one daughter was born to this union:<br />

Helenmae (Virtue) Jones. Katherine taught school in <strong>Hanover</strong> and Savanna for many<br />

years. Katherine died March 19, 1984 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.<br />

Virtue, Walter Irwin was born April 24, 1903 in <strong>Hanover</strong> and was the son <strong>of</strong> Jared<br />

William and Mary Ellen (Speer) Virtue. He graduated from <strong>Hanover</strong> High School in<br />

1921. He married Sarah Katherine White on August 21, 1928 in Monmouth, Illinois<br />

and one daughter was born to this union: Helenmae (Virtue) Jones. Walter farmed all<br />

his life until he retired and moved to the village <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hanover</strong>. He died October 3, 1987<br />

and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.<br />

Virtue, Willis Wilbur was born January 18, 1907 in rural <strong>Hanover</strong> and was the son <strong>of</strong><br />

Wilbur Johnston and Agnes Irene (Sherrard) Virtue. He graduated from <strong>Hanover</strong> High<br />

School in 1925 and attended Monmouth College. Willis married Lucile Agnes Edgerton<br />

on August 25, 1937. They adopted two sons: Leon “Lee” Willis Virtue and Larry<br />

Wilbur Virtue, and one daughter was born to this union: Jeanne (Virtue) Papesh.<br />

Willis was a minister in Endwell, New York for many years. The Reverend Virtue died<br />

in September 1976 in Endicott, New York.<br />

Volquardts, Earl John was born August 8, 1923 in Guttenberg, Iowa and was the son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Theodore Otto and Jennie (Moser) Volquardts. Earl grew up in rural <strong>Hanover</strong>. He<br />

was a World War <strong>II</strong> Veteran and was a prisoner <strong>of</strong> war in Germany for 18 months. He<br />

was married to Laura Brown and five children were born to that union: Susan Earline<br />

Volquardts, Earl John Volquardts Jr., Eric Volquardts, Evan Volquardts, and Barbara<br />

(Volquardts) Engel. Earl was a supervisor <strong>of</strong> security at the Savanna Army Depot. The<br />

family lived in <strong>Hanover</strong> for many years. Earl and Laura were visting family members<br />

inThibodaux, Louisiana when he was shot and killed by his wife on July 15, 1987. A<br />

funeral service was held in <strong>Hanover</strong> and Earl is buried in Bethel Cemetery, Osterdock,<br />

Iowa.<br />

Volquardts, Jennie (Moser) was born May 11, 1896 in Osterdock, Iowa and was the<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Frederick “Fred” J. and Sarah Ann (Dinges) Moser. She married Theo<br />

Volquardts on April 29, 1920 in Elkader, Iowa and three children were born to this<br />

union: Earl J. Volquardts, Carol Volquardts, and Dorothy (Volquardts) Petitgout. They<br />

farmed in rural <strong>Hanover</strong> for many years. Jennie died August 29, 1983 and is buried in<br />

Bethel Cemetery, Osterdock, Iowa.<br />

Volquardts, Laura (Brown) was born October 30, 1932 and was the daughter <strong>of</strong> Ralph<br />

and Velma (Sinky) Brown. She married Earl John Volquardts and five children were<br />

born to this union: Susan Earline Volquardts, Earl John Volquardts Jr., Eric Volquardts,<br />

Evan Volquardts, and Barbara (Volquardts) Engel. The family lived in <strong>Hanover</strong> for<br />

many years. Laura and Earl were visiting family members in Thibodaux, Louisiana<br />

when she shot and killed her husband on July 15, 1987. Laura was sentence to prison<br />

and died September 7, 1993 while she was still incarcerated.<br />

Wachlin, Lois Verla (Grice) was born December 10, 1930 in <strong>Hanover</strong> and was the<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Harold and Marcia Marie (Rice) Grice. She graduated from Polo High<br />

School in 1948 and in 1954 graduated from the School <strong>of</strong> Nursing in Freeport. She<br />

married Robert M. Wachlin on September 11, 1954 in Polo and one daughter was born<br />
